The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers a full scholarship for students who wish to study at Japanese universities.

Designed for students who want to study at Japanese universities as students studying for a bachelor’s degree in their chosen field.

Field of study

Students can study in any field of study. The scholarship for students is usually designed for five years, including 1 year of study in the Japanese language and 4 years of study for a bachelor’s degree. For those studying in fields such as medicine or dentistry, veterinary medicine or a 6-year pharmacy course, the scholarship can be extended up to 7 years.

Scholarship Benefits

Flights to and from Japan, university tuition, scholarship 117,000-120,000 yen per month.

Selection bias

This scholarship is available to applicants who are 17 to 25 years old at the time of departure and who have completed 12 years of schooling OR have completed courses at a school comparable to high school (including future graduates). Candidates must be citizens of countries with which Japan has diplomatic relations. A five-year scholarship is offered (first year of study in Japanese, four years of study), starting in April or September / October.

Decision-Makers

The Japanese Embassy, ​​in cooperation with interested foreign governments, will select preliminary candidates from among the applicants through interviews, academic examinations, and consideration of the submitted documents. Those who have been selected as preliminary candidates will be recommended by MEXT, which will select grantees from among the recommended ones.
